Naming Ceremonies

Naming Ceremonies

These days many people want some form of ceremony to mark their baby's coming into the world, but for whatever reason do not want the formality of a church christening or baptism service.

In Church

The Church of England offers a service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child, from the Book of Common Worship. It is intended for parents who do not want their child baptised yet, but do want to celebrate the birth or adoption and to give thanks to God.

Secular, non-religious ceremonies

There are two organizations we have found in the UK that can advise on secular, non-religious ceremonies. They will also, if required, provide someone to officiate. They are The Humanist Society and The Baby Naming Society(See details below). Please e-mail us if you know of others we should include on the list.

We like to think eGodparent.com is just as useful and relevant a resource for those who prefer to think of themselves as 'Sponsors' 'Guide parents' etc as it is to those who are more formally 'Godparents'. All ultimately have the spiritual well-being of someone else's child at heart, so many of the content pages here, such as the best thing you can give is time, will apply just as well.

Reminder

Don't forget to register their details in the reminder service ! Click here

We've got a great collection of gift ideas for children. Of course we have a religious section, but we've got a whole lot more which are suitable for all.

British Humanist Association

For a personal, unique and beautiful welcome for your child, the BHA can help.

Many parents ask for help in arranging a special ceremony to welcome their new child. In Britain the number of Christenings is steadily falling as people seek a more inclusive way of marking this happy event.

The BHA has years of experience in preparing inclusive ceremonies, so that all families and friends can relate to what is said - whether they are religious or not. Click here for web site

Baby Naming Society

Naming ceremonies in Great Britain have no legal status, which means they can be held anywhere, at any time, led by anybody and there's no set format.

In one way this is a good thing, because it means each ceremony can be tailor-made to suit each family. On the other hand it leaves most families thinking 'Help - where do I start?' This is where the BNS comes in.

Since 1994 we have been helping parents to arrange a ceremony to welcome a new child into the family. The idea was designed for those who don't feel a traditional ceremony is quite right for them. The BNS is completely independent from any party or philosophy so we are happy to design religious and non-religious occasions.

The Baby Naming Society is a registered charity and can be found at:
Yeoman's Cottage, Kerswell Green, Kempsey, Worcs WR5 3PF Tel: 01905 371070
